What does Earth Day mean for you?
Tomorrow is Earth Day and I've been thinking about what it means, in general. Since I'll be working tomorrow, it's not likely I'll be taking the ferry into San Francisco to attend any of the rallies. And I won't be riding my bike to work (rain predicted) and let's be honest, I don't ride my bike to work anyway, although it's a noble thought.
A little background: The April 22 Earth Day was first held in 1970, principally founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson. According to Wikipedia, April 22 marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day 2007 was one of the largest Earth Days ever, with an estimated billion people participating from such disparate places as Venezuela, the Ukraine, Manila, the Philippines, London, Spain and of course, New York. Protecting the environment not only for the betterment of our lives, but for future generations of children, is of tantamount importance. I appreciate the fact that more and more wineries are going green, with new, energy conserving construction and sustainable practices in the vineyards. In the wine business, it seems like a no-brainer: we strive to keep vineyards planted and producing, to protect the green belts, and everyone in the community benefits. Green should be good for everyone, not to oversimplify it too much.
We can each do our part to reduce our carbon footprint. How will you be supporting Earth Day?
